- Construction of a new tank farm
- Customer: BASF
- Task: Preliminary planning of the scaffolding in 3D, project management, HSE and coordination
Customised solutions
Customised scaffolding systems with PERI UP were successfully used for the installation of two 60 m long, insulated stainless steel tanks in reinforced concrete sarcophagi.
A comprehensive scaffolding solution with supplementary cladding protection wall was used for the construction of a tank farm on the BASF site in Ludwigshafen. The integrated solution is based on the PERI UP scaffolding system and was planned to fit the requirements on site. The new tank farm has a total capacity of 1,800 tonnes and was built to meet the continuously increasing demand. At the heart of the facility are two stainless steel tanks, each 60 metres long and five metres in diameter. promaintain accompanied the construction process directly on site for 18 months.
Our role as a partner
Thanks to the methodology developed by promaintain - consisting of digital planning taking into account all disciplines, coordinated equipment logistics and efficient material management - all relevant information was already available to the customer and the executing companies in advance. This meant that waiting times and conversions could be reduced to a minimum.
In the course of this project, promaintain developed customised solutions that were precisely tailored to the customer's requirements. The PERI UP work and protection equipment adapted precisely to the complex geometry of the tanks inside the reinforced concrete sarcophagus and at the same time provided sufficient working space for the insulation work to be carried out.
The PERI UP weather protection roof used not only enabled the protected installation of components - including the prefabricated ceiling elements - in and on the structure, but also contributed significantly to speeding up assembly and disassembly thanks to its movability. This significantly reduced crane downtimes.
Supporting the plant operator on the construction site – with the aim of optimising deadlines and keeping an eye on costs – has always been the focus for promaintain.

High security requirements
The new construction of the tank farm required a special safety solution for purification and storage: the storage had to be permanently insulated and in so-called sarcophagi – covered containers –. This construction not only protects against temperature fluctuations, but also against mechanical influences from outside.
During the sealing work on the roof of the sarcophagi, a temporary partition was erected to the neighbouring hazardous area to the north so as not to interfere with ongoing operations.
The reliable partitioning was realised with the new PERI UP Cladding – an enclosure system that effectively protects people, the building and the environment:
- from weather conditions
- from unauthorised access
- from noise, dirt and falling objects
- from dust and soiling
During the sealing work on the roof of the sarcophagus, the cladding protective wall reliably prevented sparks from flying and thus made a significant contribution to operational safety. Following the dismantling of the temporary weather protection roof, the northern scaffold support was purposefully rebuilt. In combination with the PERI UP Cladding, this resulted in a 65 m long and 5 m high protective wall, which served as a preventative measure for explosion protection.
