Construction a new ethylene oxide plant in Antwerp

`Construction
  • Construction a new ethylene oxide plant in Antwerp
  • Customer: BASF
  • Task: Preliminary planning of the scaffolding in 3D, project management, HSE and coordination

Right after some new construction projects like the acetylene plant and the vitamin A complex at the main site in Ludwigshafen, promaintain won the contract for the construction of a new ethylene oxide plant at BASF's second-largest site, in the northernmost part of the port of Antwerp. promaintain took care of the planning, assembly, material management, and safety monitoring of the construction site scaffolding. The project ran from February 2021 to September 2023.

The target budget model developed in the previous project at the BASF site in Ludwigshafen was used for the first time in this project.

Our role as a partner

During the execution phase, the focus was placed on several aspects in accordance with the BIM method: preliminary planning, engineering, collaboration, communication, data management and the transparent, sustainable provision of data for each scaffolding life cycle.

In the course of the project, more than 1000 tonnes of equipment were planned, assembled and finally dismantled using PERI-CAD. Only through careful and meticulous advance planning is it possible to offer a holistic scaffolding solution that enables subsequent assembly processes without the risk of collisions.

Close collaboration between disciplines inside the 3d Model

The key to success lies in communication and collaboration between project participants. promaintain sees scaffolding as a key function of interface management. All project participants meet on the scaffolding to carry out their work. In the EO2 project, every digital scaffolding solution was presented to all project participants and, in joint consultation, a scaffolding assembly sequence was determined and finally an installation sequence was decided upon for the project participants. With regard to the coordination of work across different disciplines, weekly meetings were organised in the EO2 project, which were led by the project manager from promaintain and supported by the technical management from PERI in order to discuss the 3D model.

The Common Model Review, now an established practice at promaintain, played a major role on the construction site in Antwerp and contributed to harmonious cooperation and far-reaching decisions.
